Who We Are

ASTAL is a high-tech scientific laboratory poised for the promotion of space research and applications of satellite Remote Sensing and GIS in Nigeria but specifically for overall sustainable development in the Niger Delta Region

Also to propagate the culture of advanced scientific research and technology innovation by building a competitive base for human skills development as well as to establish collaborative links and joint projects with research organizations

It is a centre of excellence under the aegis of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology

Our Mission

Advancing space knowledge through vigorous research and applications of satellite remote sensing and geospatial technologies for the identification, inventory, development as well as management of natural and human resources. Achieve the goal through research, user dialogues and sharing of experience in the field of natural resource survey, mapping, infrastructure development and environmental management for the well being of humanity. Also, address on inter-disciplinary interface including attention to scientific, socio-economic and environmental considerations

    To carry out pure and applied research, development and applications of satellite remote sensing, geo-information and related technologies

    To acquire, store, publicize and provide regular information about the availability of satellite Remote Sensing and attribute datasets in Nigeria

    To embark on educational and promotional activities on advanced space applications and new system developments for managers and leaders of space applications and technology development activities through dedicated conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, newsletters and field experimentations

    To generate income through products, extension and consultancy services

    To collaborate with any tertiary educational institutions, government ministries and agencies as well as private research organisations whose objectives and operations are in line with national interest
